The Province of Rimini

The Province of Rimini is the intermediate Italian Local Authority between Emilia Romagna, a region in the north-east of Italy, and the 27 Municipalities of the territory. It is governed by the President Stefano Vitali until 2014, it counts on 300 collaborators and its main commitment is the sustainable development of its community of 300.000 people living along 40km of the Adriatic Sea coast.

The Province boasts one of the most favorable wealth conditions in Emilia Romagna Region, especially for services, environment, health and social cohesion. The territory of Rimini is characterized by a high diffusion of business activities, above all, small and medium-sized companies (33,658 as of 31 December 2009) that produce and offer a vast range of top-quality and specialist products and services.

Because of the peculiarities of this land and the vocation for hospitality widespread along the coast and inland, it is a tourist area par excellence in terms of both its accommodation and seaside facilities, as well as the opportunities for fun and entertainment it offers.

In the waste sector, the Province of Rimini shows commitment and will to develop. In the last 5 years there has been a doubling of the collection, with a sharp upward trend since the first quarter of 2011, thanks also to the communication and awareness that the Province, in close collaboration with the Hera Group, has launched its territory. This process has greatly contributed to improve the new method of “transfer of unsorted waste electronics”.

Among the activities of the Province that enhance the reuse and recovery include an important voluntary instrument for environmental management: the Planning Agreement. Under the Planning Agreement the companies will undertake to carry out good environmental practices using simplified administration. This tool has been applied in three areas relevant to the reality of Rimini: The Planning Agreement for special waste from agriculture; The Contract Program for medical waste, produced outside of health facilities (beauticians, hairdressers, barbers); The Planning Agreement for the demolition and construction waste.

Within the territory of the Province of Rimini is held ECOMONDO, a showcase on the most effective technology solutions for the proper management, use and reuse of resources.

The Province, certified ISO 14001, is involved in several projects linked to the sustainable development of its land and community and plays a key role in the development of a more sustainable tourism model, leading, among other projects on this theme, the Italian Local Agenda 21 Coordination.

The two main projects are: INFEA (Environmental Education and Training Information), which aims to coordinate the activities of the Centres for Environmental Education (CEA) operating on area, increasing the supply; and “Bring the bag,” a workshop aimed at children and their parents, which convey positive messages designed to raise awareness of the “little people” and their families on the correlation between the reduction of waste production and reuse of materials and products.
